Re: Snetterton trackday - 16 May
This was my first track day in the new car and just second long drive since fitting new dry sump system and electric water pump. So was a bit apprehensive.
Left at 5.10 a.m. to get through Dartford Tunnel before 6 cos I'm tight. Uneventful journey and got there about 7.40 which was the plan as I wanted to bagsy an empty pit garage. Need not have worried about that as was a quiet day and there were 5 or 6 garages empty all day.
Noise test was a limit of 105 dB and I registered 103 which I was pretty unhappy about tbh as I've just repacked the exhaust and it's got a big 7" diameter silencer on it. Tested at 8000rpm bloody BECs. Interesting to see what it makes next time.
First outting on track and I'm struck by the amount of body roll. At least it feels like it's rolling a lot. Maybe Im not used to the sticky tyres (R888R on front and R1R? or T1R? on rear).
Wound the damping adjuster up on the dampers but I'm kinda feeling the springs maybe a bit soft?
Major'ish issue I notice is fuel starvation when exiting from left hand corners with less than 2/3 tank of fuel. The tank does have a recessed sump in it but it obviously doesn't have capacity to sustain a longer left-hand bend on track. I had to resort to keeping the tank above 2/3 full all day. This is something that had never come to light on the road... At least it hadn't to date.
Plan is to fit an additional lift pump and 1 litre swirl pot. Same setup as my zetec turbo runs.
Other issue, which i had foresaw, was the gearing. Running a 3.36 diff which is already pretty low but it really needs a 3.14 in there for the longer straights. I was getting up to 10.5k rpm on the back straight in 6th gear and that was the limiter. About 125mph. Don't like running to the limiter like that. Needs longer gearing. The hairpin was taken in 3rd, so 1st and 2nd were pointless.
Love the clutchless upshifts. Downshifts are also cool (using the clutch) because although I'm not matching the revs, the engine and transmission seems to have so much less drag or engine braking, so doesn't unsettle the car or try to brake the rear wheels. Maybe cos the gearing is relatively close too?
Coolant temp with electric water pump was a steady 90c max when hot. Oil peaking at 110c after 20 mins which i think is ok. Air inlet temps after intercooler were 60 to 65c max which is too hot. I've gonna move air filter for more cool air and maybe try encourage better air flow through intercooler.
On the whole very pleased. Car didn't use a drop of oil or require any fettling on the day.
Noise level a bit concerning.
Just really need fuel setup sorted for Cadwell Park on 6th June but that should be fine.

Sounds like a good day, nice to have some reliability!
That noise reading is a worry, there aren't too many 105db trackdays anymore

Nice one Steve. I'm glad you've got some fun out of the car after all the effort you've put in. Under recommendation, I lined the bonnet of mine with 25mm acoustic foam and it made a big difference so that might be something to think about. Not sure what air box you have but that's another thing to look at to cut the noise down.

Yeah, good write up Steve. To the other Steve, do you have a link to the acoustic form you mentioned?

Didn't know you'd change cars! New one sounds and looks great though. I won't be able to nag you anymore to fit a boot lid.
