Not rushing it Andy, dabbling when in the mood, not a brilliant year with the car last year, so that eternal question keeps popping up.. is it really worth the aggro..

Current state of play.. Alternator don't fit, so binned it. Bolts ordered for alternator bracket, which will need cutting down. Looking for a few bits for the oil pick up pipe, got the pipe but no fixings, can only seem to find it as a kit.

Padlocks seized at the car storage, need to get the pikeys to break in and sort them out.

Photography is a good distractor/mindfulness, thought I'd keep it contained here rather than irritate the masses everywhere.

Found an alternator, picked up a cheap secondhand one to make sure everything fits, before wasting more money on new parts that don’t fit. (Anyone need an alternator for a 3.9 serp?)

Just need to work through gates catalogue for a 1200-1250mm 7pk belt unless anyone knows what car I can nick one off?

Should have enough wrap, if not, then it’s a new water pump with the impeller removed and pulley left on. Multi V’s need less wrap then traditional belts apparently.

Cheers, make a note of that one, picked up a load tonight albeit 5/6 ribbed belts just to work out the size.. I think 1220 will pretty close. Got a blocked drain to sort then will get on it.

Couple of shots from the rugby.. score was 110-10 to Aylesford. Lens was too long as I was standing at the scoring end..

Spent a fair bit of the day sorting out an exploding main drain.. thankfully James was around to grab the shitty end of the stick.. He will be rewarded handsomely :D

A workmate, Tom Clarke was playing for the losing team yesterday, got yellow carded for the first time in 33 years of playing rugby, caught him doing the walk of shame in the black and white shot. Later on he and an Aylesford player had a lovers tiff, captured below.

Alternator belt sorted.. for now. Shoved a 1240 on it as a 1220 wouldn’t quite go on without a bit of persuasion. The 1240 has taken up quite a bit of the tensioner, so might force fit a 1220 and see where that ends up. Wrap isn’t brilliant, approx 100 degrees. Will see how it goes and revert back to a water pump pulley if needed.

Next job is to flip the engine and sort the sump out.

In case it helps...I was told a good rule of thumb for a poly V belt is 1bhp per rib per inch of contact (assuming correct tension). 770W per bhp. Given the alternator pulley diameter and the wrap angle plus number of ribs on the belt should be easy enough to work out a likely maximum power you can get out of it.

Worked when I used it on a supercharger setup anyway.

Dick kindly lent me his dial gauge set up to sort the timing on the engine, with all sorts of accessories to attach it to the engine somewhere. Unfortunately with the block being alloy and no part of the engine stand close to hand it was a best guess scenario.

I had ordered a dial gauge that screwed into the spark plug hole but it hadn’t turned up.. until today. Designed for bike engines, thought I give it a go, not sure what would be different. Threw it into the hole and had a play, markings are cock on. So piece of mind was had. Another tool back in the box, never to see the light of day again!
