SKCC goes Mini Rod racing.

Postby DJ. » Sun May 08, 2022 6:52 pm

I had a great day yesterday watching Matt and Kev race their Minis at Lydden Hill circuit. The racing was very close with lots of overtaking unlike some more well known formulas!

It was great that Richard was able to join us, and Kev's mother Linda provided food and drink throughout the day 8-) . Thanks Kev, sorry Richard and I didn't have much to eat but we're both trying to lose a few pounds, it's cheaper than buying carbon parts for our cars

Here's a photo of the paddock:

Matt had a good day picking up points and a trophy for third.
Kev was driving hard, but was possibly not helped by running without his front anti-roll bar connected. Unfortunately, I have evidence of Kev on the grass, but I believe Matt has followed this route previously :D

Well done both of you, it looks like a very competetive formula, and you have to be pretty brave battling in tight bunches. I definitely wouldn't be doing as well!

Yeah, well done, must be a blast.

What the heck is that AX doing in that last pic? Looks like it's from a banger race - is that what took Kev off? :D

They start two groups on the same tiny oval at the same time! They are both doing two warm up laps on opposite sides, then when racing the faster ones catch the slower group (the minis). It's very hectic from start to finish!

Good pics Duncan
Thanks for coming along Duncan and Richard
It was a good days racing for everyone else,
Because there was so many mini’s we were put into 3 groups, so this meet mini Rods groups B&C raced together and group A raced as a smaller group but we shared the track with the lydden rods but raced as two different formulas on same track
First heat finished 5th
Second heat the mini snatched to the left and I hit the tyre wall ( I had to visit the medic, before they allowed me to carry on )
Great Skcc pit crew all lending a hand with their cable ties to get the mini back together
Final was a hard battle trying to get past the 2 in front which were side by side so I thought I’d go around both of them on the worse corner on the cut through, with which I ended up out braking the corner and the mini decided it was going straight on, missing another tyre wall,
so gave up and went back to the pits.
21st May will be better.

Yes nice afternoon out, their racing starts at 3 pm and then pretty hectic from then on with only what seems about 20 mins between their heats so lucky not too much damage to contend with with only a tyre swaps to keep temps down required.
Definite some different braking times and rechniques and track lines being taken that make all the difference on these similar vehicles and mixing the formulars makes for the need to overtake so great to watch and be part of.
Now if only I had an even bigger garage and wallet. :D
