Tiger went boom !!

Postby Kegco » Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:58 pm

Strange one
Moved tiger out of garage, so I could move cars and trailer around
Left tiger running on idle 5 - 10min at most
All of the sudden a massive bang,
a plume of steam around the nose of the tiger
Then dumped coolant in the road

Split the weld on the tank
Turns out the expansion tank is off a VW Jetta
surprising I thought it was all Ford

Guru Matt H knew straight away :D

Ordered one off eBay didn’t realise it had a extra hole, for a sensor.
so now gone for a level sensor, might come in handy,
when I get around to wire it up to a light

Run up the tiger, bled the system, went over 100degrees and the fan didn’t cut in.
So maybe fan temp switch faulty.
Tested the fan
(got a manual override for the fan on dash )
Shorted the temp switch and fan comes on as well
New fan temp switch it is then

Well, that's pretty uncommon! If it was going to go, much better for it to happen mid winter and very close to home :D
Fitting a sensor makes a lot of sense and isn't too tricky.

Well done, I had the same fan temp switch issues recently after rebuilding my engine, so a new switch has been fitted along with a controlling relay to keep the main current away from the stat switch directly and due to the over boiling I've fitted a dash override switch too. So hopefully they'll both be better for run outs this year.

Has the new bottle got a new cap?

If the pressure relief valve in the cap was jammed it'd do that. If it's still the old cap it might be worth checking.

I went for a Burton one as my engine is a xflow, but I went for a 95 degree setting stat switch while the engine stat lets it pass once 90, (am waiting to get shot down) they also sell them for Zetecs and they know what you'll need.
