Interesting Steve
And my vote is to keep the paint as is. Retro-cool!

Re: Harris Magnum Rebuild
steady progress is being made on the bike. The thermostat housing was full of crap so I stripped down as much of the cooling system as I could and gave it a thorough clean.
The exhaust was in poor shape with the chrome peeling, after some thought, rather than spend a fortune getting it re chromed, I used a sanding disk and ground back the chrome and painted it matt black with high temp paint. For the end can I got an aluminium tube from ebay for £8, polished it up and repacked it. I even had an old Harris badge to rivet on and I'm very pleased with the result.
With the exhaust and wiring loom back on it was time to fit the rad and fill the engine with oil - a few turns with the plugs out and it was time! She burst into life quickly but would not tick over so the carbs are back off for a check over. It did sound good though, the Busa was ticking over providing the electric power while I revved the Harris - the neighbours must have loved it!!

Oh Steve, great post. Harris Frames were the stuff of legend and only saw them in mags as a youf.
I totally get the memories emotion moments. Keep it "in period" and with that provenance it will be worth money.
Keep the updates coming

That rear foot peg looks close to the exhaust Steve. Will keep someone’s feet nice and warm!
Really interesting write up. Good effort on the exhaust. Looks great.

Re: Harris Magnum Rebuild
Not loads to report on the rebuild considering the hours (and hours) I've spent. Lots of time cleaning the carbs (again & again) and also stripped the rear brake caliper and m/c. AP racing don't recognise the numbers but the piston and m/c dimensions are the same as some other AP classic bits so I should be able to get the seals I need to rebuild them.
m/c piston, looks ok and should be fine
25 year old crud, I stripped it right down and boiled it!
not perfect but very servicable
love the rear caliper - the one AP deny making
The more I work on it and research the old racing spec bits that have since become rocking horse sh1t the more I like it. A sign of age I guess.

Re: Harris Magnum Rebuild
Like those AP callipers Steve.
Makes me laugh that they claim they never made them. That’s when they need to find “old Frank in spares”. He’s the little old boy that has been there for donkeys years but despite the IT systems saying “computer says no” he always says “oh hang on I’ve got one of them somewhere”. 20 mins later he comes back with the widget covered in cobwebs and dust. Sadly Franks are becoming fewer and fewer.
What’s the link with Lockheed?
