Element fire extinguishers.

Postby DJ. » Sat Mar 07, 2020 8:34 pm

I'm sure many of us carry a fire extinguisher in our kits, particularly after Steve had his unfortunate fire. There are two main problems with fire extinguishers to my mind:
1. A fire extinguisher with more than a few seconds use is large and heavy
2. They go out of date and need replacement even when not used

I was watching Harry's garage tonight and he mentioned Element fire extinguishers. I couldn't believe how small and light it was, it also runs for 50 seconds once lit and apparently they don't go out of date. Sounds too good to be true, I thought, so I searched on google and found this video with Jay Leno:

So, has anyone bought one of these, and what do people think?

I'm very tempted to buy one as it would save quite a bit of space and weight in my Seven.

Saw one at a show and was not sure how effective they were as did not seem to project far and how close you had to be to fire but, certainly small and light.

I have also seen them at a show, never seen one actually being used though

Well in the end, I decided to take a chance and buy the 50 second Fire Safety Stick form Amazon. It was £78, so not cheap, but at least it won't be out of date in 5 years like the last extinuisher I bought in 2012!

Here's a photo of my old extinguisher and bracket from the boot of my Seven (weighs 3lb 13 oz for 0.8kg of powder and the internet tells me a 3.5kg powder extinguisher will only ruin for about 10 seconds)

Here is the new extinuisher and included bracket (7.5 oz for 50 second burn time)

And here they are together

I've saved some weight, managed to mount it under the dash so I can grab it from the driver's seat and saved space in the boot. At least it won't be out of date if I need to use it :)

The date code is really for competition and you can get them serviced/re-dated 3 times before you need a new one.

I’ve been mulling over getting one of these Duncan after your post. Hopefully you never have to find out how well it performs. But I do like the idea of the space saving and the long life on these.

The demo on the TV show isn’t on a fire unfortunately.

Here's a video on YouTube:

I was impressed how long it lasted, but as Richard said you have to get close, so it won't do much once a car is well alight.
