Picked up my car today, but questions?

Postby Dav » Sat Aug 10, 2019 8:10 pm

Finally, I'm behind the wheel of a kit!!!

So I've got some questions in regards to the mighty Pinto!

It doesn't have enough puff it seems to pull it's self up slight motorway hills. Need to drop down to 4th, even 3rd on some of them, that doesn't seem right? Starts fine, sounds ok on the move but seems really underpowered for a 2l. Anywhere I should begin looking?

Also, is the little fuel filter bowl supposed to be full all the time? Mine isn't, only about half full.

Another also, I have to gently press the throttle before I give it any kind of beans, otherwise it just bogs down, and if I do give it the berries, it's almost like I've caught it off guard, like it hesitates slightly. Is this "that carb life" or does something sound up?

Please help this wet-behind-the-ears newbie

Thanks!!!

There are many more knowledgeable people on here than me, but doesn't sound like the engine is running correctly. There should be plenty of torque from 2 litres as you say, and with only a kit to pull, you shouldn't have to change down on slight inclines.

I hope you enjoyed the drive otherwise :)

Sounds like you need a visit to someone who knows there way around tuning a car on carbs, assume you have a carburettor set up? My first Pinto engined Tiger made 130bhp+ and went pretty well. I took my Sprite to BD Engineering in Kent, chap there knew his stuff.

Yep, sounds like the carbs are out of balance and tune.

What carb/carbs has it got? It could be as easy as a blocked jet. Only accelerating when you go easy on it sounds like a accelerator pump not working which could be a diaphragm split or jet blocked. Hard to tell much without knowing what’s on the car

So the carb is an Edelbrock jobbie, and it has "32 36 DGV 5A" stamped into it, does that mean anything to anyone?

As per the pic, fuel seems to literally pour into the top opening and nothing into the bottom when the throttle is applied. A light vapour comes out of the bottom one when the throttle is shut.

I thought fuel was supposed to be sprayed in?

I’d be tempted to go and buy some carb cleaner, and blow out the jets, remove and clean one at a times and replace.
clean the fuel bowl and check floats and just give the whole carb a spray and clean.
All the best

It isn't really an Edelbrock, some one has stuck a sticker on it. 32 36 DGV 5A is a Weber carb which is pretty standard on Pinto as far as I'm aware. Sounds like it needs a good seeing to, somewhere like Atspeed in Essex or BD Engineering would be able to sort it out for you.
