Since being laid up over the winter my car’s acquired an intermittent misfire. It runs and drives normally from cold but once up up to temp after a bit of driving it starts to misfire and won’t even idle without stalling. Last time it did this I sat at the side of the road for maybe 15 mins and then was able to start it and drive home again which luckily wasn’t far.
I’ve checked the plugs and they seem fine, as do the HT lead connections. Does anyone have any advice on how to diagnose this when it’s intermittent?
Cheers.

Re: Intermittent misfire
I don't know your set up, but I gave know coil packs give trouble when hot, but then gine again when cold.
Do you have a usable OBD port?
Good luck

Check on the ECU to see if you are getting a crank signal when it is warm.

Re: Intermittent misfire
I’m guessing I have a Ford coilpack. It’s run from an Omex 500 (so no OBD port) with Jenvey TBs which had new Magneti Marelli injectors when installed last year.
Currently thinking of swapping out the coilpack for a new one and another source of concern could be the wiring loom as that’s been hacked about a bit.

Re: Intermittent misfire
like Duncan says, coil packs when hot can break down....i had that a few years ago on the Lands End run....
didn't know what it was at the time, the AA came out, couldn't diagnose as by then it had 'cured itself', manifested itself worse on the run home.
i'd pick up a 2nd hand one from a breakers if you can, just bear in mind there are 2 types for fords - depending what leads you have ( the posts on the pack are different)...i think i last gave a whole tenner for one as a spare.

Re: Intermittent misfire
One fairly good tell tale sign on the ford coil packs is they crack down the sides and on the bottom. If it’s cracked it’s usually a good pointer to a coil problem

Re: Intermittent misfire
A long shot maybe but NCD on this forum had a long running & similar problem, which turned out to be fuel filter related, he swapped to a larger filter & it cured it - strange but true.

no doubt correct most/many times, but mine looked 'normal'....

Has the fuel been sat in it a long time Russ? Drain the fuel and replace with fresh fuel first.

Re: Intermittent misfire
I doubt it’ll be the wiring as you had a plug and play loom with that Omex, plus it would most likely be intermittent all the time
I had a fuel pump that started to break down once warm but my votes on the coil...
