Riv Nuts

Postby Weathers » Wed Apr 10, 2019 6:51 pm

So it looks like the hole drilled needs to be about 2mm bigger than the M factor ie an M3 bolt riv nut would require a 5mm hole, M4 bolt riv nut a 6mm hole and so on. Does that sound about right?

Also, they are available in different metals, stainless etc. Is there are rough guide to which ones to use for which metals? Or does it depend on the bolts to be used? Or stresses involved?

Last Qn: what metal riv nut should I use for the Westfield chassis? Especially in an area exposed to crap ie the front bottom of the car that needs to hold the bonnet hinge?

Thanks

Lee, a riv-nut is a bit like a pop-rivet, but with a thread on the inside so you can put a captive nut on something or into closed box section,

Weathers, Aluminium riv-nuts will be OK for p-clips etc, but for your application I'd use steel. Get good quality ribbed ones as they grip better. If you go for stainless riv-nuts don't use stainless bolts as they will "gall" (seize). In fact, I just would avoid stainless bolts, they're probably a bit low strength for this.

If it was me I'd use ribbed steel riv-nuts with a good quality zinc plated hex bolt. These people are a good supplier & will sell you just the quantity you need.

From my recent experience I would advise not being too heavy handed with the pliers. I snapped the M5 mandel after I continued to heave on it after it had already 'squashed' to its limit. Thankfully a spare was available.

David I did the same thing a few years ago. I wasn’t sure it was squished enough so gave it “just on more squeeze”. They’re not cheap to replace either.

Thanks everyone else.

I paid £13 for mine from eBay ;) - never had any problem with it throughout my build...
