2019 - You Can Keep It

Postby Fury1630 » Sun Mar 31, 2019 5:54 pm

It seems it's not just the Queen that has an Anus Horiblis (did I spell that right?). Apart from all the other cr4p this year I was looking for something to tinker with on the Fury when I found rather more than I bargained for:-

Yes that's a crack in the chassis, it's a known place for the racers to crack (apparently) & they cure it with a chassis brace, which I'm now in the process of making for mine There's an obvious problem in that the racers use bike engines which are shorter than a Zetec, so there's room for it, but I have a plan.

Sorry to hear you've had yet more bad luck, but in a way it is at least good that you have found it before anything dangerous happened.

I'm sure your repair will make it better than new :)

That’s not good!! Glad you found it when you did though

Is your cunning plan a quick plan, or will it take a bit longer that you would hope?

Longer than I'd hope, as I'd hoped it was just a line in the paint :D
Apparently it's a known crack zone for the race Furys, they fix it with a link bar between the rear mounts of the front rockers - that's easy if you have a bike engine, it'll take a little more engineering to make it work with a Zetec, but I have the basics built, I'm going to bolt & weld it as I know what my welding is like

Oh, & it's got to be removable or I will have locked the engine in the chassis.

Spent most of today making a suspension brace. It's easy on the BEC racers, just bolt a bit of angle between the rear rocker mounts, job done. Not so easy with a Zetec as the line it want's to take passes through the alternator & water pump pulleys. It also needs to come off to change the "fan belt", so mounting it by the rocker bolts is a non starter unless you want to remove the front suspension to change a belt. Anyway, I've made something that will do the job, I just need to modify a few other bits, it's so close to the water pump pulley that I need to get reduced head bolts  & I need to put a hole in it so I can get an allen key on the alternator mounting, then I can drive is somewhere to get the original crack welded.

Yes, I'm going to have to do some careful testing or one day I'll go for an "ambitious" overtake, there'll be a rending crash & that brace will come up through the bonnet! :D
