Not quite Project Binky!

Postby DJ. » Mon Nov 19, 2018 6:07 pm

My nurse was ill, so I've had to take the day off. It gave me a good opportunity to get my forge and welder going 8-)

I have to do the timing belt on my car this winter, and it has a 14mm crankshaft pulley bolt that has to be torqued to 100Nm then turned 90 degrees, wait 10 seconds and another 15 degrees............

I anticipate some fun removing it and re-torquing it, and last time I bent the tool that holds the crank pulley still (made by me following Haynes manual design). So I decided this time I would make something beefy.

So out came the Cardboard Aided Design to make a circular piece that engages with the four curved slots in the pulley. Once I had it fitting the pulley, I drew the design onto 6mm steel sheet (leaving some extra in case it needed a bit of adjustment). I then annoyed the neighbours cutting it out with my angle grinder.

Next I had to fire up the forge and get it hot to bend it into a circle, that was the fun bit

Once I had it fitting the pulley, I welded the ends together and then welded on some 20mm internal steel square tube with 3mm wall thickness. Here are some photos of the finished tool:

The tube end will hang downwards and I intend to bend some 3/4 inch mild bar to fit into the tube. This will rest against the floor to stop the pulley turning, giving me easy clear access to get the long 3/4 breaker bar in from above. By making the bar removable, I can reverse it for tightening/untightening.

It beats working on a Monday :)

Nothing serious I am pleased to say, she's had a lot of time off lately with one thing and another, but they couldn't get cover today.
