Winter Mods 2018 - 19

Postby Fury1630 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 8:36 pm

Nothing exciting yet (OK nothing exciting at all), the car's not off the road until the end of the month, but a few small things have happened.

The new comms system & an additional camera, meant a re-arrangement of the power supply system. The twin USB & 12v sockets behind the passenger seat got swapped for twin - twin USB sockets & the old 12v & twin USB got moved to a new panel beside the driver's seat, so the radio & iPod / phone transmitter can be plugged in. The red wire will get re-routed when the car comes off the road & taken apart.

In case you're wondering the car now has 9 USB sockets  :?

Next on the list is the filler cap. When I built the car it had a sort of aeroplane vibe going on, so it got an aero cap, as time's gone by the car's got more retro, so the aero cap was looking out of place, then I sunk it into the car to cut out the boot lid & it wasn't looking at all - yes I'll admit there's som "Man logic / Man maths" going on here.

I'd wanted a '50s style flip cap for a while, so I got one as I was passing CBS a while back, but it weighed in at a hefty 750g - I couldn't be having that, so the lock ring (3" dia & 3/4" thick!) got dumped & the neck got turned down, so the thing now weighs 500g - still way too much, but I wanted it.

With no lock ring, I needed a new way to mount it & made up a drilled plate, which bolts to the underside& will bolt down through a cake-tin "splash bowl" to the existing filler support structure. My plan is that the new cap will be flush-ish with the boot lid. We'll see.

I've been working on the flip-cap this afternoon & I have to say, I'm quite pleased:-

I had to make a larger splash-bowl, so that's made from a 6" cake tin :D

Very tidy, have you ever considered aeronautical engineering, I think you'd be good at it!

Gaps evened up & edges smoothed :D

It took an awful lot of thinking about & a lot of work, but if I've got it right, no-one will notice it because it looks natural. 8-)

Today I tackled the exhaust, it’s been getting louder (I think) & it’s been a while since I re-packed the silencer, so I took the pod down (one bolt span – I drilled the bracket off) & took the silencer can apart (two bolts sheared). The wadding was very sooty but not as bad as I’d feared, so I spread out the wire wool inner layer, wrapped the new wadding round that & the old wadding on top & pushed it back into the can (having replaced the riv-nuts with sheared bolt tails stuck in them). This time I used titanium bolts, so hopefully they’ll come out next time.

The next job is to re-route the over-axle hump as with two people in the wheel rubs on right hand bends, so I'll be doing some WELDING (look away now if you can weld & are of a sensitive nature).

The exhaust's done :D

The route it took over the back wheel meant that with two people in the car, the nearside rear tyre rubbed on right hand bends, the solution was to add an additional joint made from a short length I found in the garage, move the bend immediately behind the silencer forward & use the extra length of the new joint to lift the rest up into the wheel arch. Seems to have worked, there looks to be a good 1 1/2" - 2" clearance at all the places it was rubbing before. Total cost £30 & £20 of that was for a auto darkening welding mask :D .

The only other "Must Have" for the winter is to change the 15 year old cam belt, so I might be out again early next year
