Tony yes the plate is something that was needed for sva/iva . I would strip it down and clean it all up and cut it off the ball joint and reset the alignments if it was mine . There was something that said the joint could pull out of the hub this is why they fitted them but in truth if you look at the way the load is applied it would not come out as the load is in the wrong direction but then im not the inspector.

That alignment plate is all Ford:-
Sierra Strut.jpg

The front upright in you pictures is the same as mine. To make them, I took the Sierra struts & cut them just below the spring pans, removed the oily gubbins & sent them off to Fisher where they were set in a jig, cut to length & the offset top mount welded on in the correct position relative to those plates. I got them back re-assembled & painted. I'm not saying they can't be improved, just think carefully before you take a grinder to them.

Thanks for that Tony, the point that Dick and I made is that there needs to be another fixing in place for IVA other than the pinch bolt, to stop the assembly from rotating or parting from the hub. Ford part or extra bolt through the side, same purpose. Unfortunately the plate setup does not allow easy castor adjustment in the same way as a mushroom set up as in the image below.

If it was mine I would currently go with making then rotational like the mushrooms then put a secondary bolt through them once aligned. That said, best to do nothing until we catch up with Steve he may have a more obvious solution which we’ve overlooked.

Im not saying leave the lock plates off, once its all set as it should be castor/camber then weld them back on.

Thanks all, interested to hear Steve's opinion too, it sounds like later models may have had upper rockers with a shorter tube to permit the fitting of shims, moving the rockers rearward would also bring the shocks back to vertical, they're angled forward at present.

Understood gents, I just thought it was worth pointing out in case there was an angle grinder already poised .....

It's a moot point, but I think the more recent chassis have the same rockers, but the rear bracket is moved rearwards by about 1/2". If they narrowed the rocker it would be retro-fittable to our chassis, but I think I read they kept the rockers the same.

The reason was to ensure the steering self-centred for IVA, the theory being you put the spacers in front of the rockers to give a lot of castor, then after the pass, moved them back behind to give "normal" Fury handling.

Of course I stand to be corrected, just recounting what I've heard to fill in some blanks until FSC respond :D .

Caught up with Steve. I’ll pm you his email Tony.

The early fury’s had a fixed castor, which this is one of them. Later ones had the rear bracket moved as Tony H described to give some adjustment.

Options on this one:

Cut down tube and pack with washers, though this won’t give you a lot of leeway as there is not much overhang on the tube past the bones.

Dicks suggestion is a good option.

The other option is to rose joint the bottom bone.

Steve did mention about the Ferrells in the top bones, just check that their function isn’t impaired with whatever option you go for cutting down or moving brackets. He can supply longer ones if needed.

One last thing the top bones need to be on the inner mounting hole, the outer hole is for the escort set up, inner for Sierra. The bottom joint can be wound in a bit then redo the geo.

Bushes not in stock, email him and he’ll let you know when they are in.

Hope this helps :)

Mike,

Thank you very much for taking the time to visit Steve on my behalf, it's most appreciated. I might try shortening the top tubes and see what that gives me. I can take that on myself (I can't weld), and see what that gives me, if not enough I'll have to go for the top joint or rose joint the lower wishbones. Not sure what the issue with the ferrules is? Is this the bushes in the end of the tube, or the metal tube through them.

Thanks Tony

No problem Tony. Re the Ferrules, I wasnt sure what Steve meant especially not knowing how they go together. I assumed he meant an inner tube which goes through the lot? Though if you need new ones he's the man.
