Spark plug deposit - red colour

Postby MangoFury » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:21 pm

Just pulled out the plugs on my Zetec Fury to get an idea of what's been going on after much fiddling with the Megasquirt spark and fuel maps.

Hoping to see the usual grey/brown deposits but instead the plug tips are a distinctly oxide red colour.
The texture is about right, powdery, not glazed.

Done a bit of surfing and found references to additives in the fuel causing this colouration - but I haven't added any.

Anyone come across this before?

Red tips to the plugs are a definate indication of a fuel additive. Are you filling up at the same garage? Some petrol companies use more additive than others, usually the cheaper ones such as supermarket garages. Try getting your fuel elsewhere and see if it makes a difference. Other than that I'm mystified.
