Scotland, May 2023

Postby locost220 » Mon May 15, 2023 6:36 pm

So this Friday is the start of the Rogue Runners tour and although this is an established event in some calendars it will be my first roadtrip on this isle for some years, by my reckoning 2013 and my first in Scotland as the original tour group split in half back then when some of us decided to tackle Europe.
With the Eurotrip on the back burner this year the established RR crew have let me join them for some miles of smiles for 10 day trip.
So the Locost will be left to fester in the garage as not quite tour ready yet and the Robin hood has once again stepped up having reasonably behaved itself on previous visits abroad and had a nut and bolt check, I have gone a bit light on the usual packing of half the garage and kitchen sink and restricted myself to an extended breckie+ tool kit.
One advantage of the 2B is the addition of a full windscreen, doors and roof although I prefer going commando it has been suggested these would be a good idea due to the usual at least 1 day of rain and / or midges. Crash helmet has also been prepared as seems to help with radio reception and speech although I hope to be able to hear some 80s sounds as well.
Tony H and co have prepared what looks like some cracking routes and Hotels with a 2 night stay at Selkirk on the way up, then a few based at MOO with more than enough out and back routes to keep us entertained before another 2 night stop over at same hotel in Selkirk on the way back down at the end of our 10 day adventure.
Tony has had a play with the route to allow me to get a pic at John O’Groats as sure the others have all visited it previously. Mileages on each day varies between 384 on the big drive up to 160 if you decide to take the short of the two provided routes on day 6.
Looking forward to some great company, roads and scenes for some photo opps, hoping to get some pics, video or diary up on a regular basis during the week, now where is my passport ?

Safe Journeys Rich and the gang. If you’re coming through Kelso over Hunter Bridge, give us a wave!

Hi Beefy, there's a pic of the route we SHOULD be on on the 20th. Looks like there's three bridges, only two are named on TYRE neither of them are Hunter's Bridge, so that must be the one on the right?

Oh yes, by way of explanation, MOO is Miur Of Ord - the village we're staying in north of Inverness. This explains (sort of) the tour name & the cow in the Frank Miur bow tie on the tour sticker.

That’s it Tony, the A698. It’s quite a new bridge which bypasses the town. I assume you are travelling right to left towards Selkirk, as Abbey Row is a one way street. There’s a cemetery on the right as you approach the mini roundabout at Hunters Bridge The cemetery entrance is at the roundabout with the lodge inside the gates.

The Jet garage on the hill is reasonable for fuel. Diesel currently 139.9. The town square is quite attractive and a reasonable stop off with bakers, coffee shops and a Greggs in the square.

Have a great trip Tony.

Say 1 completed a few hrs ago without too many dramas for anyone, few small spots and I do mean spots of rain in the morning in a couple of places, had to bitch my SKCC jacket in the afternoon as just too cosy and even had a few sprays of the suntan lotion to save getting a red nose, last couple of hrs were simply fantastic ( thanks Tony ) , sort of a continue mix of Beachy head road, meets military road meets the best of the Yorkshire moors.
Couple of stops for tea (and cake ) finished off with super in the hotel and now a Kip in a 4 poster bed.

Scotland Adventure Day 2 was another corker, I decide to go with some skin on show as the forecast showed sunny skies, after a hearty breakfast and some quick car checks we set off about 9 with full tanks due to the ‘fill up before you park up’ advise on these trips.
Selkirk to Selkirk loop was selected on the various Tom Tom itn routes that would allow us to dip our toes back into England and we set off in 6 car convoy that lasted a fair while till my TomTom fell asleep and so I ended up going back down a stonking bit of road I had just come up only to realise my error so had the pleasure of going up it again that put me behind the others by about 10 mins, so I enjoyed the next hrs or so taking opertunity to stop for some pics and remove even more layers of cloth and spraying sun tan cream as the sun shone.
After another self inflicted error I eventually found most of the pack or more to the point Robert jumping up and down and waving at the side of the road, after more cake we cracked on with the miles dropping of the routes soaking up so more roads and snatching more pics when I could as we did everything from roaring up passes to tip towing round cow poop on the way down.
Another fuel stop lead to me and Robert having a good chat with various bikers, fuelers, some strange locals !.
Despite the extended stop there we decided to complete the route rather than wimp out and head back to the digs and glad we did as we passed some lovely waters and sights on the way.
Cars all topped up and some have been debugged already for tomorrow when we have to leave Selkirk for now and head north but already ordered the meals for the return visit on the way back down Friday and Saturday.looks like half the pics have not loaded so will try to repost later
