I have Dax Rush, Rover 3.9 V8.
Was advised to try to get non-engine bay air to the air intake filter, currently back left hand corner of the engine bay
Was thinking about a scoop inlet there either on the top or side of the bonnet section
1. Has anyone done this?
2. Does anyone believe this is a good thing to do for engine performance?
3. Haven't surfed much so far, but have found a few.
Anyone any thoughts?

Re: Air intake for engine
getting fresh cold air into your engine is a very good idea.. i would do it.

Yeah, everyone thinks it's a good thing to do.
Cooler air is denser - more air molecules for a given volume of air, so more oxygen available for combustion - though debatable how much difference it actually makes. My car definitely seems to go noticeably better on a crisp day.
Also - if you have an air temperature sensor and the air intake temperature gets too high, then the ECU could be doing various things to keep within safe operating parameters - retarding the ignition timing etc which will decrease performance.
My air filter is located right down by my front wishbone... lots of cool air, though possibly at risk of flooding in a deep puddle

my car performs much better on a cold morning with all filters off!

Re: Air intake for engine
My Dax airfilter is on the top of my engine due to being a bike engine but i guess the v8 would be similar, so fresh air goes straight to the engine.
Cooler air is less dense so gives a better explosion so cool air is king
My dax then has vents down the side to which i can only assume is to allow the air to flow through the engine bay.

Re: Air intake for engine
I've done it. NACA duct on the bonnet ducted through a filter & into an air box, but it can be as simple as a forward facing intake & some ducting pointed at the existing air filter.
I know it works because the airbox is cold after a run. As to whether the performance is better, can't say I've noticed, but it certainly does no harm.

No, cooler air is MORE dense. As I said in my previous post

Re: Air intake for engine
Cutting a hole in the bonnet with the air filter out there made a difference of 5 bhp
The Zenos needs the air intake moving as it is noisy and the intake temperature should make a difference to the engine performance too.
The air intake on the Ultima takes it from the outside as the engine bay gets very hot. Which is a big problem for the running of the engine when it is on full chat. It uses a lot of fuel and so need to find a way of loosing the energy without getting more temperature into the engine.
My view is put it out there
