Navigate to the Itinerary Planning menu option on your TomTom (check out How To … Check if Your TomTom has Itinerary Planning if you’re not sure how to do that).
If you have previously loaded, or create an “on the fly” itn file, you will see it’s waypoints listed. Ignore these, don’t let them confuse you. Instead, press Options.
Press Load Itinerary
Your TomTom will ask you if you want to delete all locations in the current itinerary.
Again, a bit worrying, but you want to press Yes, because what it means by that is, do you want to clear out that list of waypoints from the previous itn file that was loaded, the ones you saw when you first selected the Itinerary Planning menu option
Once Yes is pressed, you will see the list of itn files available on your TomTom. Below are the files currently on mine, as an example. Just press on the one you want to follow.
You will notice that some of them are longer than the screen will show, and I have the wider TomTom. This isn’t a problem. If you press the name of the file you think you want, it will decrease the font so that you can see the full name
If whilst doing this the file accidentally loads, and it isn’t the one you wanted, just repeat the process from where you pressed Options.
When you are happy you have the correct itn name, then press it, and the file will load – you will see a list of the waypoints in the file appear.
Again, if you’re sure this is the file you want, press Done.
Your TomTom will then as you if you want to navigate to the first location in the file it has labelled as a Destination.
Press Yes. You will then be asked to select your preferred type of route (i.e. fastest, shortest, etc.), if you have your TomTom set to prompt for this, and preview of the route, as usual.
A Word about Route Type Selection
Typically “Fastest route” is fine, if you have your TomTom set to always ask you the type of route. The point of an itn file is that it has waypoints set which “force” the TomTom to find a route which passes through these, in conjunction with your route type selection. Left to it’s own devices, and having had Fastest Route selected, your TomTom will chose motorways/dual carriageways if the start/end points of it’s journey are reasonably distant. SKCC itn files have waypoints selected which usually mean it’s slower for TomTom to try and use these types of roads, so don’t be worried that Fastest route will choose these.
Choosing Shortest route on an SKCC itn file already “optimised” for the ideal blatting roads might have undesired results, introducing even more farm/single tracks than intended.
If you usually have your TomTom set to Avoid motorways as your default route type preference, don’t forget to unset this for any days where some element of getting from A to B quickly is required (e.g. Day One, with some initial M20/M25 mileage required).
