Sometimes they're laid on their side to indicate the direction of the turn...

I think in the case of Greenbelt MC it was just to add to the confusion, there were so many cones it was difficult to work out the chicane onto of the finish line, so just to make it clearer they added a few more - doh!

Probably one of my favourite pictures I've taken this year, obviously not valid as my cars not in it, but I love the action and drama as the legend skims through the Padock Hill gravel trap at Brands. He held the slide perfectly and made it back to the track 8-)
