A very cold and slippery Brands 07/12/12

Postby SteveRST » Sat Dec 08, 2012 12:56 am

So today I was on track at Brands Hatch for my last track day of the year. The day was open-pit-lane format and was arranged by Mazda-on-Track, so as you can guess there were sh1t loads of gay  MX5's about. Probably about 40 odd cars today - maybe 20 MX5's, a few track prep'd Mk1 Golfs, highly modded RX7 (which went off into the armco and sustained some body damage), an S2 Elise, 205, Ginetta, 911, 964, GTR R35, Pug 405 Gti, RX8... so quite a few others to district from the swarm of MX5, but there was only one '7' type car there - mine! :D

The track was wet when I arrived at 8 a.m. and it was starting to rain again. Noise test no issue - 96dB (105dB static limit). After the briefing I went out straight away even though it was raining and very, very slippery. Around 9:30 it started to sleet/snow so I came in for a while before something silly happened out there - I was really just tip-toeing around the corners. The rain eased off around 11:00 but track remained very slippery - coming out of Clarke Curve onto start/finish straight I was getting oversteer at 80+mph which was scary! After lunch a dry-ish line was starting to appear and by the end of the day I was able to carry some decent speed around the corners.

Took 3 of the MX5 guys out for passenger rides, and they were all very impressed - I think I've converted them to kit car enthusiasts :) I got a pax ride in a supercharged 5 running nearly 200 bhp which was pretty cool and sounded great.

The car went really well - didn't even have to get my tool box out once! I was bloody cold but excellent fun, and the varied conditions and track condition meant that I was able to learn a lot.

Only took a few pics though

The track does look rather treacherous! Well done for braving it, must have been really cold.
Shame about the RX7, it's always nice when everyone goes home in one piece.

It's alright. I've got an MX5 too so I can say that.

It's worth keeping Mazda-on-track in mind for trackdays. They are pretty cheap and you don't need to be in the. Owners club or even own a Mazda. This day was £99 which is very good for open pitlane day.

That's very good value for Brands, I'll tell my brother he lives just down the road and owns a Fury :)

That is good value for Brands. Well done for getting out there in the weather and drifting at 80 :!:

I'll take a look at the MX5 club and compare it to Lotus On Track who are good value too.

looks like it focused the mind a bit, glad hear you kept it on the blackstuff and it ran fine (especially ad i'm looking at it on the wscc front cover!).
