Man Cave Mk2

Postby b33fy » Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:32 pm

Been knocking up a bit of a shed in my spare time so a bit of a declutter can take place. Dug out a few raised beds and put in some concrete pads. The idea is to put in a suspended floor off the existing slab, rather than extend it. 6x2 floor joists, 4x2 frame and roof trusses. Clad in OSB, Tyvek and weatherboard Hopefully it’ll look something like this.

Pads done and new floor started, getting the levels right was a PITA. Found out later on the existing slab was not level!

Knocked out a couple more raised beds and moved the existing shed to finish the floor. Ended up using a load of 6x 2 to support it, which has left me a bit short on joists until it can come down. Also built a temporary ramp to access it until the ground can be levelled properly.

Walls going up, uprights at 400 centres with plenty of noggings, a bit overkill but want it to last. Using 90mm galvanised ring shanks fired in with a Dewalt 1st fix gun. The gun is crap tbh. You have to finish quite a few off with a hammer. That’s when it isn’t jammed. Unjamming is a mission.. I now know why it comes with an Allen key attached.

James has been a great help. This is pretty much where we are at. Need to finish the uprights and noggins on one side then start on the roof trusses. Not likely to get much further for now as wood supplies have dried up unless anyone knows any place still open that delivers at a reasonable cost.

Impressive work :)
What roofing material do you plan to use?

I've just finished treating the wood on two of our ( much smaller) sheds. The third one with the anvil is metal so I can't set it in fire

Blimey Mike, in a previous post you were thinking of renting property ? you might as well build that and rent it out, it looks very good.
Great post as well, something different.

Thanks Duncan, quite enjoy messing about with a chop saw and nail gun. Will put a moisture proof OSB decking on the roof for starters. Was thinking finish with glass fibre but they are messy to do and you’ve still got to UV proof them with paint after. So the front runner is rubber (EPDM) which comes in one sheet, UV proof, straight forward to fit/ glue, lasts 30-50 years and is not too much money.

Thanks Colin, not keen on the flimsy flat pack sheds. I don’t mind putting in a bit of effort and time for something half decent and if we sell it won’t look too bad in the property details.

Should be able to house quite a few Aussie illegals in that Mike :D
