New Winter Project

Postby Tony C » Wed Oct 09, 2019 8:06 pm

So, as most of you know I’m no longer a kit car owner, so what to do with the winter evenings? I’ve decided to get back into a spot of homemade wine/brewing again after a lapse of 20 years. I planted vines in the garden when we moved here and the grapes from these are fermenting nicely, but it would be good to be able to press fruit such as apples. Presses are available, but they are costly for something which won’t see much use (£150+). Thankfully the interweb had a solution using a car jack! After all if it can lift 500kg, surely it can press a few apples? Progress so far is good, a few old fence posts and a car jack lying around results in this beauty. The bucket is there for effect, a plunger needs adding to the jack, but I’m struggling to get a suitable straight sided bucket/tube’ of 30-35cm dia. It doesn’t need a base, but needs to be strong enough not to split under pressure........... So I’m asking if anyone of the resourceful amongst you has any ideas?

Underground drainage pipe like a chamber riser? Galvanised spiral ducting?

No sure how much pressure they could withstand.

Not sure 100% but could you not make it like an apple press ? they are normal square , a square box with a square press head .
