outdoor wifi extenders / access point

Postby greenwoo » Tue Mar 05, 2019 6:01 am

Anyone played around with any of these?
by 'these' i mean the outdoor antenna/repeater that connects to an indoor router/switch via ethernet cable and is then mounted outdoor to give signal through the garden?

am wondering what impact ( if any ) trees/shrubs in line of sight may have on distance. I need to get wifi to my gate, but whilst positioning such a device on the closest building would be a no brainer to achieve that, it wouldn't be optimal ( i;d imagine ) for the rest of the garden. ( Although the gate is the priority/driver for this, wifi in teh rest of the garden would be a boon if it can be done simply).
Whereas the alternative location that would also be easy to fix/sort to give wider garden coverage would mean that the sight line to the gate would be shielded by laurels/trees.

I know i can buy one and suck it and see....but wondered if any of the great and good had any 1sthand experience of 'these things'.

I can not your question and as I am not a tech person but I have just brought a budget mesh system - Tenda Nova MW3 Whole Home Mesh WiFi System... it did cost not much from Amazon (I am sure other suppliers are available!).. What has surprised me is the garden coverage improved considerably with one of the boxes upstairs near the back of the house!

I was going to have a Mesh system, but opted for Sky Q to provide the indoor coverage...but even with that and a repeater/access point indoors right by the rear of the property coverage outside is flakey...

Have you tried upstairs for the repeater? I have read that this can give a much better coverage

that might prove costly Alex, as we'd have to build another storey - we live in a bungalow

Looking forward to your report Mark, was thinking of getting one at some stage so I can get WiFi at the bottom of the garden.

I've got an Asus router and it comes with a feature called AIMesh, have been toying with the getting another Asus router to extend wifi to the garage. No idea if it's any good...
Yes I've been drinking, what of it!!
