First Hill Climb - Shelsley Walsh

Postby leegav » Fri Apr 13, 2018 10:56 am

Well guys...
After buying all the kit this week i have finally booked the first of many hill climbs @ the world renowned Shelsley Walsh on 17th June. The oldest motorsport venue in the world i beleive with the first car going up in 1901.

I have booked a training day in May too at the venue so i dont look a fool on race day.

Feel free to come along and stick two fingers up as i hoooon past the stands.

Still got some bits to do to the car first but almost there... :D 8-)

i can see this bug catching hold of me very fast....ive already been dreaming about it

Sounds very exciting mate. Put up a thread to say exactly what you've had to do/buy for the car and attire for yourself.

Pity Shelsey Walsh is so far away otherwise I'd promise I'd make it.
What other venues are you likely to be at?
Westfield Zetec turbo & Westfield Megabusa turbo

Thanks guys.
Yes looks scary. Thats one of the reasons i want to do it. Ive heard that one of the apexs is blind over a crest and you turn it at 80mph. :D

Steve
So i first registered for the msa non race b licence which was about 50 quid. Then you have to join a club to be able to book events so i joined the HSA which was 50 quid.
Ive bought new harness, helmet, hans, boots, gloves, shoes and balaclava probably spent a grand on that. I need a timing strut fitted and a rear tow eye as i have one on the front but not the back. You need a battery cut off switch fitted and clearly marked. I want to compete at some of the real famous hill climbs were there are lots of spectators,im guessing that will add to the fun and tge nerves. Im going to do 3 or 4 this year. Gurston Down in somerset is on my list, ive always since a child wanted to go up Olivers Mount in Scarborough and i would like to do one of the new closed public road events and there is one in sept in Truro.

I then registered at shelsley walsh under the HSA speed chanpionship (my "home" club and that was 150 quid for the days event.
Luckily i had the correct tyres already which are listed in the blue book anyway but mine ar r888r. Contemplating buying a set of wets as the money might just save me from completely stacking the car if its wet.
There are quite a few other general rules in the blue book that need doing such as roll cage etc but luckily i have a full cage already.

I promised myslef i would do it this year so ive gone all in. :D
Looking forward to the training day. You get 8 runs up and they are all debriefed afterwards including some tuition on turn in points and braking points and it includes breaksft lunch and afternoon tea for 200 quid.
Roll on May

He was fine though, testament to the cage.

Have you checked that the cage meets the Blue Book or is certified by the MSA? It might be worth finding your local scrutineer and asking if he/she would give the car the once over before your first event.

Car Scruntineers. Might cost you £50 but at least you'll know.

There are a few in Somerset and Wiltshire so not a million miles away.
