Is this a first at Silverstone?

Postby Crunchie Gears » Mon Aug 07, 2017 7:21 pm

I went for a track day at Silverstone, which is not a first granted :D

I had booked my ARDS test today so had borrowed a Caterham so I had a sensible car to do it in. When I spoke to the instructor, Chas, he asked me what car I had to do the test in. I said I had borrowed a Caterham and he said I would like to talk to you so what did you bring? I said well what I came in might give the wrong impression. He said what is it? I said an Ultima.

So I took my test in an Ultima and even with a sensible head on we where doing over 140 mph. Chas said, it would amuse his colleagues. Not only that but I passed :D :D

Neil (Nash) and a couple of mates came too for a pass ride or two. I have some video which I will upload with Neil driven by Ian Payne and a few laps with me driving a bit slower   that said the car is truly awesome!   :o The power delivery is just so smooth and it does not seem to matter what gear you are in just touch the load pedal and it sling shots down the road. It handles in the corners too. Even on road tyres it has big grip. It has a little understeer but apparently a splitter helps with this and you always have the power to even it out.

It is just so much fun at speeds I can hardly believe.

So my first is taking my ARDS test in a crazy car

I can confirm the instructor was blown away by the weapon that is Paul's Ultima. In fairness the instructor was part of a long queue of people blown away by the car. As Paul said Ian Payne, Paul's "Team Manager" (he looks after Paul's cars and will also be driving with Paul next year) took me out for some "HOT" laps. Epic experience as Ian is a very experienced racing driver and he made the Ultima dance. Over 165mph up hanger Straight and the car wasn't anywhere near pushing hard! As for cornering some understeer but cancelled out with the right foot. The thing that surprised me was how balanced it was. It gave loads of confidence in any and every situation and didn't try to bite at any time. Truly brilliant car Paul.

Well done on the pass. Post the race dates so we can try to get along to at least one of the races
MkII Marlin Roadster with Ford 2.0L Pinto and Type 9 gearbox. Going for the oily rag restoration look :-)
