Le Mans 1955

Postby 2kwik » Mon Jun 07, 2010 6:32 pm

don't know who saw the BBC4 programme last night - it followed the Hamsters interview with Sir Stirling. I think it was called the worst crash in motorsports or something but reflected on the 1955 accident that saw between 80-120 (they never concluded exactly how many) dead and the old footage was frighteningly graphic. They added the modern technology to piece together evidence of how it happened as well and you can't argue that it changed the whole way we watch motorsports. I'm surprised the french didn't close it down the day after.
There's a reason behind armco, standoffs, concrete walls and this was it. An awesome piece of documentary. Watch with awe on i-player. :o

This also changed how we watch motorsport

Turns out I am related to the guy who died when McNish's F3000 went into the crowd.

This is the one that put the sh1ts up me. Tom Pryce himself is buried in Sevenoaks. I've pasted the link to the one that tastefully blurs out the track marshall - but there are others on YouTube from several different angles. I think the marshall was only 19!

Thanks for that watched it twice i think twice too much horrific!
Though my claim to fame is that i was in the crowd at Silverstone when Michael Schumacher broke both his legs and David Coulthard went on to win the race so life is not all bad.
