Brands Hatch Test Day 1st April 2022

Postby b33fy » Sat Apr 02, 2022 10:37 am

Uploaded some new firmware to the camera which has enabled vehicle and helmet tracking. I can only really describe it as witchcraft..

Pushes the boundaries for awkward shots. Picks up cars instantaneously from behind buildings trackside furniture etc and locks on through fencing and with erratic panning. Locks onto the drivers helmet/face if they are in open top or single seaters. A few examples below.

The long distance pan of the jag was at 700mm 1/40th sec. It was just appearing from behind the pit complex I was standing on the south bank car park. I impressed myself when I took it

Excellent piccys as normal Mike, I particularly like the 2nd British racing green picture - I wonder why he has odd front tyres?

I don’t think I would ever get the hang of photography!!

I don't think they are different Tony, if you look closely his right hand front is locked up and not rotating hence you can see the tread. I'm looking forward to spending the day up there tomorrow 8-)
Cheers Mark.

Thanks all for the positive comments, very much appreciated.

@Tony. Even with sticking to a few very basic rules you can improve your snapping no end. Keeping the horizon level is a quick win. Double checking for odd objects/backgrounds like branches or plants growing out of peoples heads is another. Like anything practising helps tremendously, doesn’t matter if it’s a camera phone or expensive bit of kit.

@Mark, yep it’s a lockup. Resolution isn’t great on images uploaded here. Same image on Flickr here.. https://flic.kr/p/2nbVxCW you’ll notice a difference.

@Colin, enjoy a challenge and always trying to improve by experimenting with settings and pushing the boundaries a bit. The hope is if I do it enough it gets easier, doesn’t seem to work that way though. Most people appreciate shots for what they are, rather than the technical difficulty getting it. In other words good simple shots are just as good if not better than the more difficult ones. My favourite is the Jag shot because it was the most difficult to nail, though I can see why it’s not appealing to the general audience.

Mike, out of all your shots I think the best are those approaching druids. I have had some really good ones from inside druids. I have tended to find best results panning with a sp of between 60 and 250, it gets more "speed " in to the shot. 8-)

It’s trying to get something different tbh. On a busy day the toggers are queuing for the fence gap to get the Druids shot.. it’s the typical trackday shot, albeit fast shutter static image. Because the car is coming towards you it’s a tricky pan, balancing sharpness against movement. I like to try something different if I can to get a different angle etc sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.
