Minirod mk2

Postby Matth93 » Sun Mar 14, 2021 3:13 pm

So with the damage the old car got last year I picked up another mini to strip for parts. When I started looking around it I found it is in better nick than the other car (no rust or body damage) it had a terrible judder when you press the clutch which shook the whole car though.
It has been gradually stripped out at work but was getting in the way so I brought it home and dumped the old car and my trailer at my parents house.
Today Kev came to give me a hand to get the gearbox out but we got a bit carried away and took the engine out too so we could remove some plastic that wasn’t needed from behind the engine.

I need to get a new clutch now and some bushes for the front suspension then it can all go back together

Good job Matt, was the clutch contaminated then? I have read that sometimes you get judder when dual mass flywheels fail, but they're usually in diesels.

No if you look at the pressure plate the fingers have worn away with some broken off which was causing the problem. The drive plate was almost on the rivets too

The see saw is much easier and higher than Jack and axle stands. We also let it right down undone the engine mounts and lifted the car off the engine and box with no effort at all

I thought about using mine for the Honda but would not really work for getting the box back in etc.
Did you end up with a standard drill to raise and lower it or a hi torque one.

I take it your still going to rag the last out the first mini still.

Always nice to get a head start on the next car prep.

Yes the plan is to use the old one a bit longer and get the setup fully worked out so I can then set the new one up right from the start.
I got a cheapish sds drill from toolstation for the lift which works well a smaller one just didn’t have the power to cope

Personally I like the use of a skateboard and an engine trolly. Reminds me of when I put my son's old stabilisers on to a pallet to shift an engine about

Got a stash of the wheelie boards, we find the Tesco ones work best, :D

Removed and moved plenty of 3 litre Essex engines with scaffold poles and rope and tried to walk them down the side of mates house without taking chips out the gate frame and house bricks that his mum used to curse about.
