Yep, the focus and everything was ok, its the movement of the car in relation to the camera exacerbated by the slow shutter speed. The back stayed parallel and moved in tune with the camera, where as the front was moving away from the camera, it may also have been moving up and down. Its called the parallax effect. To get a perfect pan when the whole car is pin sharp, it needs to move in a parallel motion uniformly across the camera without any bumps on the track.
Its not really gonna happen tbh, so best bet is the focus on the race number and aim the get that sharp. At 1/25th sec, I'm just happy to get something that looks like a car 1/60th is as slow as I normally go. Working through a load of pans.. will pick out a few of the best ones and post up tomorrow.
In the meantime last couple tonight, I've called this "and it was going so well".. in the first shot the peugeot had just started loosing it at Paddock, by the time the pack had arrived at the bottom of the hill it had all gone wrong, sorry about the dodgy shot, didnt quite know where to point the camera lol.

think i need to grow a few inches to get those shots at the bottom of paddock....like the capri/firenza one.....and like the abstract shots of the roof/race number....good thinking.

Thanks Mark, would have done some more abstract stuff, it was just too cold. You've a good one of Jay, not sure about the B&W one.. the livery doesn't transpose that well imo. Clocked the candid shots as they were happening.. frozen to the spot
Some panning from me, a bit of matt treatment and vignetting.
