Aloha from the coast

Postby Mac » Wed Jul 31, 2019 3:36 pm

Hello there!
Ive been looking for "the one" (a car that meets my complex needs, that is), and I've come to the conclusion I cannot find it in the mainstream line of cars.

So, short of spending £30k on something like a TVR (which I can't afford  ) i'm wondering if a kit car is where it's at?? I'm relatively confident in my spanner-work and try to do as much work on my own cars as I can.

So i'm on the lookout for something with a roof, 4x seats and a sense of fun!
Suggestions welcome!

Mac

Forgot to mention I'm situated just outside Brighton!

Ive had my eye on a Covin 911 replica - anyone seen or owned one?

Hi Mac,
Welcome to SKCC, you are in the right place.
I’ve got a Tiger 7 for sale, but only has 2 seats and no roof
So not much use to you.
I’m sure someone from the club has had experience from them.
All the best hunting

With respect, you're probably not in the right place if you want 4 seats. Even that Covin, the rear seats are probably useless for anyone with, say, legs :D

I can't actually think of any proper 4-seater I would call 'fun' in the same way our kits are - 4 seats means big, heavy and all the penalties that means. 'Fun' means small and light...

Good luck with the search... ;)

does sound like a complex list that you're looking to tick off....
4 seats and a hard top in kit car territory are rare, only one i can think of is a Ginetta G26

Hi Mac, welcome to SKCC. I think we need to know a bit more about your complex needs to advise. Some things like:

  • What are you looking from a car performance-wise?
  • Are you going to use it on track, road or both?
  • Why 4 seats and a roof?
  • What were you looking for in manufactured cars that you didn’t find?
  • Is there any particular aesthetic you’re looking for? - you’ve cited a Covin, is it a replica you’re after particularly?

BTW I’m in Brighton.

Cheers

All fair points, and the 4 seats will be pushing the norm for self built cars I know. But with 2x teens and a youngun that I've been known to ferry about on occasion - I need a car that could do it even if only for short runs. I'm just bored of the standard fare on pistonheads and autotrader.

Currently driving an Audi S4, but looking for something less "generic German". Also on ze list is a classic mini or a TVR Cerbera (but that would be seriously pushing the budget and it would probably be a basket case).

Its unlikely i'll be taking this car to a track day, so performance doesn't bother me too much. As with everything though - that could change

Once the kids are less dependent on us for transport, then maybe I can actually get on with the Cobra 427 build I've always promised myself #swoon

Welcome to the club
I can’t think of anything else that’s got 4 seats. As Kev mentioned you could go something like a Spartan which has small rear seats, the ford based ones are bigger than the triumph ones but look nothing like a Porsche.
Good luck with the hunt

Get one of them :)

Great fun to drive, will ferry your kids around and keep the rain off their heads, very unconventional compared to a modern German car, if kept well will hold it’s value or appreciate. Ticks all your boxes.
