Quick Hello.

Postby Rexholme » Wed Nov 14, 2018 12:30 am

Hello everyone.

I am new completely new kit cars / Se7en type car but hooked on the idea since having a few rides in my mate's Caterham; plus they're are one of the few machines that fit in my TINY garage. Sadly I don't have a car yet but thought is would be good and helpful to join SKCC to meet local, like minded, experienced people.

We moved house last year and I am now in the position where I don't really need a second car - I work in London and can walk to the station. This has created the potential for me to get fun toy but it comes with its own constraints.

We have a dated house that needs some serious work (= cost) and I have two young children - 6 week and 3 years old. The challenge that comes with whatever I might buy, is being conscious of money, in that it needs to be fairly depreciation resilient. Basically, modernising old houses and having young children does have a habit of creating unexpected costs ;) so I need the potential to sell the toy (hopefully not!) without losing too much money. E.g. a Boxster S with its IMS bearing issues and £550 road tax is not an option - plus the afore mentioned small garage

It appears that used cars like Furys, Tigers, Westies, Caterhams etc. don't depreciate too heavily, so long as you buy at the right price in the first place. I guess low supply and enthusiast following gives them some sort of inherent value.

Car wise I'm looking for a fun road going/road legal car, that fits in the garage, mainly for fast-road and SKCC type meet-ups but also occasional track use (est. twice a year). I suspect that 170-180bhp would be more than sufficient given in something that weighs under 700kg given that an S1 Elise weighs c.730kg, apparently has 118bhp, 122lb ft of torque and good for 0-60mph circa. 6 secs. Caterham's seem to pricey for me unless I want 8v Vauxhall engine and even then, they're not cheap. Westies look ok but prices still can get a little high for my budget. I recently joined the Tiger Owners group to learn more about those and hopefully you guys can give me your thoughts and experiences on other options too.

Anyway that's enough about me and my first world problems!

Regards.

Mike

Morning Mike, sounds like you've done your research, residuals wise Caterhams / wWestfields will hold their value, but they are more expensive in the first place. Other kits still hold their value, the principle factor can often be the engine - a Duratec car will be worth more than a Zetec car will be worth more than a Pinto / crossflow car.

Recently kits seem to be going up in value a little, driven I guess by the classic car bubble. One limiting factor to watch out for might be size. Many Sierra based cars are as wide as a Sierra because of the rear axle (Jeremy Phillips designs - Striker, Phoenix, Fury etc aren't as the drive shafts are shortened) so be a little careful & take a tape measure!

The Sylva / Raw Striker would probably be a good bet, they are not so well known, so don't attract Caterfield prices, but are every bit as good (check the racing history), they have a very good reputation with those in the know, will hold their value & are very small. Also look at JPs other designs - Riot, J15 & Vectis.

Finally, keep an eye on the run-outs & feel free to ask for passenger rides, generally people are more than happy to show off their cars - & there's a full English at the end! :D

Welcome to the club Mike. This time of year is the best time to pick up a bargain.

Any questions or advice required you are in the right place to ask.

There is always a passenger seat kicking about if you feel the need on a run out and why not get your name down for the Christmas breakfast and meet a good few of us.

Once again welcome.

........ Neil

Hope to see you out soon

Hi Mike,

Welcome

You'll probably find most kits will fit in your garage, mine is very narrow, but two previous kits with full width Sierra suspension and drive shafts have fitted, it just limits the major maintenance you can undertake. I've sold both of my previous kits for about the same as I paid for them, not saying I have spent money on them in between buying and selling, but parts delivered to work mean this generally goes unnoticed

Cheaper cars will have Pintos or Crossflow engines, are perhaps less saleable, but will have plenty of power to make them fun.

Good luck with your search

Yep! And this one https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1047317
It was actually your car that made me take notice of Furys when I saw in around Guildford.

You'd be welcome to a ride in mine but it's on SORN for winter maintenance :(

You can have a poke round it in the garage if you want.

There's lot's of videos if you search "Fury1630", they're not very exciting, but give an idea of how a Zetec Fury goes, look at anything with "North Weald" or "Gurston Down" in the title.

Hi Mike and welcome to SKCC.
A small garage from 1936 is what steered me towards a kit car too, see you at the Christmas breakfast.
